The Basics of Professional Carpet Cleaning

Keeping a house clean can be a pretty daunting task. Homeowners often have busy lives, and it can be easy to procrastinate housekeeping duties in favor of more pressing matters. However, there are numerous benefits to keeping a neat and tidy home and we think you’ll find the effort is worth it. With that in mind, today on the blog, our team at Rug Renovating is addressing a few common questions about professional carpet cleaning.

Is Professional Carpet Cleaning Necessary?

The first question we often get is whether it is even necessary or beneficial to invest in professional carpet cleaning. Homeowners often think that regular vacuuming and spot cleaning is enough to keep their home clean. However, experts say a square foot of the average nylon wall-to-wall carpeting can hold more than a pound of dirt, dust, and allergens! And while it's certainly important to vacuum regularly, without the addition of professional cleaning, your carpets aren't as clean as they could be.

How Often Do My Carpets Need to Be Cleaned?

For the best results, we typically recommend professional carpet cleaning once a year, or once every 18 months depending on your situation. For a family with older children and no pets, you may be able to go even longer between cleans. However, if you have young children and pets, you may need to consider cleaning every nine months or so. Homeowners with allergies, light-colored carpets, or warranties to uphold also may need more frequent carpet cleaning. It really depends on your lifestyle and personal preferences.

Which Carpet Cleaning Method Is Best?

Now that we have you convinced that professional cleaning is necessary, you may be wondering which method to choose. At Rug Renovating, we use steam cleaning or hot water extraction to clean installed, wall-to-wall carpets. This method uses a soap solution sprayed onto the carpet and then lifted out, removing the soap, water, and dirt. Extraction is really the best method as it leaves the least amount of detergent behind, and it is often the detergent that attracts the most soil. This is by far the best at-home carpet cleaning technique you have access to, and when done properly, will yield the best results.
